2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe at Washington Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram

As the hybrid electric vehicle segment expands at a fast rate, Jeep has burst on the scene with the 2021 Wrangler 4xe! The 4xe is a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) powered by a turbocharged engine, two electric generators, and a 400-volt battery pack. This setup provides enough power for whatever you throw at it, has the Wrangler's legendary off-road spirit, and, best of all, it gets almost 50 MPG! Keep reading below to get an in-depth look at the all-new hybrid Jeep Wrangler 4xe!

Climb over tough obstacles and go an electrifying 0-60 mph in 6 seconds. A plug-in hybrid turbocharged engine gives the Wrangler 4xe an impressive 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of instant torque for heart-pounding performance off-road and on-road.

The Wrangler 4xe system is paired with a 2.0L I4 DOHC direct-injection Turbo PHEV engine to bring out the best in already proven Jeep® Brand 4x4 capability. A 16-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, regenerative brake booster and eight-speed automatic transmission work together to send impressive amounts of power and torque to each wheel, maximizing the capability of every component. The sealed and waterproof battery pack and electronics even perform in tough conditions like fording creeks and streams up to 30 inches in depth. Preproduction model shown.

When the battery has more than a 1% charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for nearly zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles.

Whether you want to take off-road adventure to new places or simply get around town on all-electric power, the Wrangler 4xe is ready with an EPA estimated 49 MPGe rating. E-Selec driving modes that utilize Power Routing enable you to optimize performance while eliminating range anxiety.

It's easier than ever to get a charger into your home, like the simple-to-use Level II Jeep® Branded Charger. It can fully charge the Wrangler 4xe battery in approximately 2 hours versus 12 hours using the included Level I charging cable.

What makes the Wrangler 4xe so powerful?

The Wrangler 4xe's power comes from the combination of a 2.0L turbocharged I4 engine and two electric motors. One electric motor is mounted to the cylinder head, and the second is mounted in front of the transmission, replacing the torque converter. The electric generators are powered by a 17-kWh, 400-volt, 96-cell lithium-ion battery pack placed under the rear seat. A TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission provides even torque distribution and smooth shifts. This setup offers 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of instant torque for a quick 0-60 time of just six seconds! The 4xe also gets 49 MPG, a 21-mile electric driving range, and a 370-mile total driving range. To provide a customizable driving experience, Jeep developed E-Selec drive modes, allowing drivers to choose between hybrid, electric, and gas power. E-Save mode disables the electric motors to save energy and charge the battery while the 2.0L turbocharged engine propels the vehicle. Hybrid Pages are displayed on the touchscreen to show drivers real-time data like usage, battery charge, and fuel economy.

Is the 4xe still off-road capable?

Absolutely! All three Wrangler 4xe trims have earned Jeep's coveted Trail Rated badge meaning they've withstood a vigorous five-phase test. The Wrangler 4xe still has the usual Dana 44 heavy-duty front and rear axles, full-time four-wheel drive with a transfer case, a high-strength steel frame, underbody skid plates, and a towering 10.8 inches of ground clearance. Enhancing the 4xe's off-road chops is the 470 lb-ft of torque that is instantly available from the electric generators. This allows drivers to move the wheels without building up RPMs, making those low-speed crawling situations a walk in the park! The 4xe can also take on up to 30 inches of water for those wet trails. This is made possible by an air intake at the top of the engine bay, sealed electrical connections, and the battery pack's placement under the rear seat, protected from the elements.

What are the trim levels and features of the 2021 Wrangler 4xe?

The Wrangler 4xe trim levels are based on the upper-most trims of the gas-powered Wranglers. The Sahara trim comes with high-end features like a 9-speaker Alpine premium audio system, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity, an 8.4-inch infotainment touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, leather-trimmed upholstery, keyless entry, and push-button start. Just like the gas-powered Wrangler, the Rubicon provides superior off-road capability with FOX suspension parts, an electronic disconnecting sway bar, electronic locking front and rear differentials, a Rock-Trac 4x4 transfer case, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and high-clearance fender flares. The High Altitude trim brings top-shelf luxury with quilted leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, LED exterior lighting, Gloss Black 20-inch alloy wheels, and more.
